What is Invisalign?

Clear aligners that straighten your teeth discreetly

Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner system — a series of custom-made, virtually invisible plastic trays that gradually and gently move your teeth into their ideal position. Each set of aligners is worn for one to two weeks before progressing to the next, guiding your smile through a fully planned sequence of tooth movements.

Unlike traditional fixed braces, Invisalign clear aligners are removable, comfortable and nearly invisible in social situations. Adults and teenagers across East Dulwich choose Invisalign because they can carry on eating the foods they love, brush and floss normally, and progress through treatment without the appearance of metal brackets or wires.

Why Choose Invisalign

The modern way to straighten teeth

Invisalign combines advanced 3D digital planning with beautifully engineered clear aligners — giving you a treatment that fits your lifestyle and delivers highly predictable results.

Nearly Invisible

Clear, thin aligners that most people won’t even notice — perfect for professionals and social occasions.

Comfortable Fit

Smooth medical-grade plastic — no metal brackets, no sharp wires, no ulcers on your cheeks or tongue.

Fully Removable

Take your aligners out for meals, special photos or important events — then simply pop them back in.

No Metal Brackets

None of the appearance or hassle of traditional train-track braces — just discreet, elegant trays.

Digital Treatment Planning

Advanced iTero scanning and ClinCheck software plan every movement of every tooth from day one.

Predictable Movement

Each aligner delivers a specific, controlled movement — so you can see the finish line before you begin.

Fewer Emergency Visits

No broken brackets or poking wires means fewer unplanned trips to the dentist during your treatment.

Fits Busy Lifestyles

Longer intervals between reviews and remote check-ins make Invisalign ideal for busy schedules.

Common Concerns

What can Invisalign treat?

Modern Invisalign can now treat the vast majority of orthodontic cases — from simple cosmetic tweaks to more complex bite corrections.

Crowded Teeth

When there isn’t enough space for teeth to sit straight, causing overlap.

Spacing & Gaps

Uneven or noticeable spaces between teeth that affect your smile.

Crossbite

Upper teeth sitting inside lower teeth when biting down.

Overbite

Front upper teeth overlap too far over the lower teeth.

Underbite

Lower teeth sit in front of upper teeth when the jaws close.

Open Bite

Front teeth don’t meet when the back teeth are together.

Mild Relapse

Movement after previous braces or retainer loss in adulthood.

Smile Aesthetics

Cosmetic refinement to improve the overall balance of your smile.

Your Invisalign Journey

From consultation to your new smile

A gentle, fully digital pathway from your first appointment to the day you reveal your new smile — every step planned, every movement predictable.

Step 01

Consultation, Digital Scan & Clinical Photographs

Your Invisalign journey begins with a detailed clinical examination, a digital iTero scan of your teeth, clinical photographs, profile photographs and a full view of your upper and lower arches. We’ll talk through your smile goals, any concerns and what Invisalign can realistically achieve for you.

Step 02

Smile Simulation & Treatment Planning

Using Invisalign’s ClinCheck digital software, we simulate exactly how your teeth will move over the course of treatment. You’ll see a 3D preview of your final smile before we start and we’ll discuss your treatment options, timelines and cost.

Step 03

Invisalign Laboratory

Once you approve your personalised treatment plan, your digital scans are securely transferred to Invisalign, where your custom aligners are precision-manufactured. Treatment usually starts approximately 3 weeks later, when your first set of aligners arrives at the practice.

Step 04

Wearing Your Aligners

You’ll wear each aligner for 20–22 hours every day, removing them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing and flossing. Change to the next aligner in the series exactly as we’ve planned so your teeth continue to move as intended.

  • Wear for 20–22 hours each day
  • Remove for meals and drinks (except water)
  • Brush teeth before reinserting your aligners
  • Change aligners according to your treatment plan

Step 05

Your New Smile & Retainers

Once treatment is complete, we take final clinical photographs and a final digital scan to record your new smile. We then provide custom retainers to keep your teeth in their new position for the long term — retention is a lifelong commitment to protect your investment.

Treatment Duration

How long does Invisalign take?

Every smile is different. Treatment length depends on the complexity of your case, how many teeth need to move, and how consistently you wear your aligners.

~12 wks

Minor Corrections

Small cosmetic tweaks, minor rotations and mild relapse after previous braces.

4–8 mo

Moderate Cases

Mild to moderate crowding, spacing and improvements to smile aesthetics.

12–24 mo

More Complex Cases

Significant crowding, bite correction and comprehensive full-arch alignment.

Invisalign vs Fixed Braces

Which option is right for you?

Both Invisalign and traditional fixed braces can straighten teeth beautifully — the right choice depends on your lifestyle, priorities and the complexity of your case.

Appearance Nearly invisible clear aligners Visible metal or ceramic brackets and wires
Comfort Smooth plastic — no ulcers or wires Brackets can rub cheeks and lips
Oral Hygiene Brush and floss normally Harder to clean around brackets and wires

Common Questions

Invisalign FAQs

Does Invisalign hurt?

Invisalign is generally very comfortable. Most patients feel mild pressure or tightness for the first day or two after fitting a new aligner as the teeth begin to move — this quickly settles and is a positive sign that your treatment is working.

Can I eat with my aligners in?

No — aligners must be removed for eating and for drinking anything other than plain water. This actually means you can continue to enjoy all your favourite foods without restriction.

Can I drink coffee or tea with aligners?

We recommend removing your aligners for hot drinks and any coloured drinks. Hot drinks can distort the plastic and coffee, tea, red wine and fizzy drinks can stain your aligners. Water is fine at any time.

How many hours a day should I wear them?

You should wear your aligners for 20–22 hours every day, removing them only for meals, drinks (other than water), and cleaning your teeth. Consistent wear time is the single most important factor for a successful outcome.

What happens if I lose an aligner?

Contact us as soon as possible. Depending on where you are in the sequence, we’ll advise you to move to the next aligner, go back to the previous one, or arrange a replacement so your treatment stays on track.

How often will I need appointments?

Typical review appointments are every 8–10 weeks, though this can vary depending on your treatment plan. Some checks can be carried out remotely with photographs.

Can Invisalign close gaps between teeth?

Yes — Invisalign is excellent at closing small to moderate gaps and spacing. Your custom aligners gently move each tooth into position until the spaces are closed.

Can Invisalign fix crowded teeth?

Absolutely. Crowding is one of the most common issues we treat with Invisalign. In more crowded cases we may plan gentle interproximal reduction (small polishing between teeth) to create the space needed.

Can adults have Invisalign?

Yes. The majority of our Invisalign patients are adults — from professionals in their 20s and 30s to patients in their 50s, 60s and beyond. It’s never too late to straighten your smile.

Will I need retainers afterwards?

Yes. Retainers are essential after any orthodontic treatment to keep your teeth in their new position. We’ll provide custom retainers and explain how to wear and care for them.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost depends on the complexity of your case and the number of aligners required. We’ll provide a fully personalised quote at your consultation with no obligation.

Is finance available?

Yes — we offer flexible finance options to spread the cost of your Invisalign treatment into affordable monthly payments. We’ll discuss the options during your consultation.

Can I whiten my teeth during treatment?

Yes — many patients choose to whiten their teeth during or immediately after Invisalign. In fact, your aligners can double as whitening trays with our professional whitening gel. Learn more on our whitening page.

Will Invisalign affect my speech?

Most patients adapt within a few days. There can be a very slight lisp initially — the more you talk, the quicker your speech returns completely to normal.

Are there small attachments on my teeth?

Many treatment plans use small tooth-coloured attachments to help the aligners grip and move certain teeth. They blend well with the natural tooth shade and are removed at the end of treatment.

Is Invisalign suitable for teenagers?

Yes — Invisalign Teen is specifically designed for younger patients, including features to accommodate erupting adult teeth. A consultation will confirm suitability.

How do I clean my aligners?

Rinse them each time you take them out, and brush them gently with a soft brush and cool water. Avoid hot water and standard toothpaste, which can be too abrasive.

Can I do Invisalign if I’ve had braces before?

Yes — Invisalign is a very popular choice for correcting relapse after previous orthodontic treatment. Often only a short treatment is required.

Can Invisalign fix a deep bite or open bite?

Modern Invisalign can treat many bite problems including deep bites, overbites, underbites and open bites. Your consultation will confirm whether Invisalign is right for your specific case.
